Suppose that a child survived the destruction of the Jedi temple on Coruscant at the hands of Vader? He was maimed, but was able to get away and find shelter and help to heal his wounds. Being a Padawan, and not having any family on the planet, he became a street urchin, using his undeveloped Force abilities to influence the gangs and street scum he inevitably would come into contact with.
Fast forward thirty years.
He is now a minor member of an organization that worked to smuggle weapons across the Empire to aid in the Rebellion. When the Empire fell, the organization went broke because of weapon embargoes and lack of targets. As a mid-level worker in the business, he was forced to strike out on his own, buying passage on ships through his innate Force ability, which he always kept secret. After a time of this, he meets up with the illustrious party of the Renaissance and forms a sort of loose affiliation with them, hiring out his talent as an underground weapons smuggler to aid the crew in keeping away from Ban Cul's clutches.
But he never makes much of his position, and doesn't give the slightest hint that his Force power is present. After thirty years of living within the Empire and dealing with the Imperial blockades, he has learned to mask his Force abilities to anyone who might detect them. To everyone, he's just a down-on-his-luck smuggler without a ship.
Basicly, picture Shepherd Book without the "Shepherd".
